Why Go
Anse Marcel is reached by a single road over a ridge, and it ends there. The bay below is small, sheltered and north-facing, with a beach at the head of it, a marina tucked behind, and steep green hills closing it in on three sides. Nothing passes through, which is why it is among the quietest places to stay on the French side and why the walk out of it — into the national nature reserve and along the coast to beaches with no road at all — is the best thing about being here.
The Experience
The cove is compact: a curve of sand, a handful of restaurants and shops around the resort, and Port Lonvilliers, the marina, sitting in a lagoon behind the beach. The water in the bay is calm and shallow, sheltered from the swell that reaches Orient Bay round the corner, which makes it easy swimming. Beyond that there is very little — no village, no strip, no nightlife, and the nearest ordinary shops are down the hill and along the coast. What there is instead is the reserve: the coastal path east from the bay leads to Petites Cayes and Grandes Cayes, empty beaches reachable only on foot, and the hills above give the view back over the whole north coast. The area rebuilt after 2017 unevenly, so check that a business you have read about is still trading. The isolation cuts both ways and it is worth being honest about which way it cuts for you: a week here is genuinely restful and genuinely uneventful, and the drive over the ridge to find dinner elsewhere gets old faster than most people expect it to.

Walk east. The coastal trail out of Anse Marcel into the nature reserve leads to Petites Cayes and on toward Grandes Cayes, beaches with no vehicle access and, on most days, nobody on them — it is the best short hike on the island and it starts at the end of the bay. Go in the morning, take water, and wear something better than flip-flops, because the path is rocky and there is no shade for stretches of it.
The Practical Stuff
Anse Marcel is about thirty-five minutes from Princess Juliana airport on the Dutch side, fifteen from Grand Case and twenty from Marigot, over the open border with no formalities. You need a car — one road in, nothing walkable beyond the bay, and no useful public transport. Parking is free and easy. There is no supermarket here, so shop in Grand Case or Marigot before you arrive. This is the French side: the euro is official with US dollars widely accepted, French is the everyday language, and shops keep French hours. The bay is sheltered and swims well year-round. Hurricane season runs roughly June to November, and the recovery from 2017 has been slower in this corner than on the Dutch side.
