Thrifty Car Rental — St. Kitts

Freedom on four wheels, from the airport straight to the island's far corners

Why Go

St. Kitts is small enough to circle in a day but packed with cliff-top lookouts, rainforest turns, and beach bars no taxi loop covers — and a Thrifty rental is the cheapest way to see them all on your own clock.

The Experience

Operated locally by the TDC Group, Thrifty's St. Kitts counter sits at Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, so you can land, sign, and be on the coastal road in under an hour. Expect a practical Caribbean fleet — compact automatics and small SUVs suited to the island's narrow, sometimes steep roads. Staff handle the paperwork for your visitor's driving permit, walk you around the vehicle, and point you to the left-hand-drive quirks: here you drive on the LEFT, roundabouts included. Once you're rolling, the whole island opens up — the southeast peninsula's twin-ocean views, Brimstone Hill's volcanic slopes, and villages the tour buses skip.

What to Try

Book a compact SUV rather than the smallest economy car — the extra clearance pays off on the steep pull up to Timothy Hill and the older village roads toward Old Road Town and Brimstone Hill Fortress. Then do the classic circumnavigation: the full island loop is roughly 50 km and makes an unhurried, stop-everywhere day trip.

Insider Tip

Every visitor needs a local temporary driver's licence on top of their home licence — but don't trek to the Traffic Department; ask the Thrifty/TDC desk to issue it when you collect the car (budget around US$25, cash or card). And reconfirm your pickup time by phone if you land on a weekend — counter hours at the airport can differ from what booking sites show.

The Practical Stuff

Location: Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, Basseterre, St. Kitts (TDC Thrifty also serves Nevis from Charlestown). Phone: +1 869-465-2991. Book ahead in high season (Dec–Apr) — the fleet is finite. Remember: drive on the left, speed limits are modest, and goats and monkeys genuinely do cross the road. Fuel up in Basseterre or Frigate Bay before heading to the peninsula, where stations are scarce.

Pair It With

  • Timothy Hill Overlook — The first stop every renter should make — the Atlantic-meets-Caribbean panorama is a five-minute detour off the peninsula road.
  • Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park — A UNESCO site awkward to reach by bus; with your own car the steep access road and northern coast drive become part of the fun.
  • The Strip at Frigate Bay — End your driving day with beach-bar dinner and sunset — an easy, well-lit run back to most hotels.
  • Cockleshell Bay — Peninsula beach with Nevis views and beach shacks — reachable in comfort only if you've got wheels.
