Expect a friendly, unhurried Kittitian-Nevisian pace — paperwork, a quick walk-around of a compact SUV or sedan sturdy enough for the pitted coastal ring road, and a reminder that here, you drive on the LEFT. Most travelers get sorted in 20–30 minutes and are climbing Round Hill by lunch.
What to Try
Book a small 4x4 or crossover rather than a sedan — the road up to Golden Rock Inn and the dirt spur to Herbert Heights Lookout reward extra clearance. Ask about weekly rates if you're staying more than three days; they're materially cheaper than the day rate stacked up. Grab a car with a full tank from Charlestown's Sol station before heading counter-clockwise around the island so you can loop back without a fuel stop.
Insider Tip
You cannot legally drive in Nevis on your home license alone — you need a temporary local driving permit (about US$24, valid for three months). Thrifty will issue it on the spot if you bring your home license, which saves a separate trip to the Traffic Department. Do it at pickup; the police checkpoints outside Charlestown do ask.
