Sandy Point is the largest town on St. Kitts outside Basseterre, sitting on the north-west coast beneath Brimstone Hill Fortress — the vast eighteenth-century citadel that is the island's World Heritage site and the reason nearly every visitor comes to this end. The town itself is a working place of shops, bars and a long black-sand shore, largely untouched by tourism, and it is the natural stop before or after the climb up to the fort.
The Experience
The main road runs through the middle of town parallel to the sea, lined with small businesses, churches and painted houses, and the pace is ordinary rather than arranged. The beach below is dark volcanic sand with fishing boats on it, used by the town rather than by visitors. What defines the place is the hill: Brimstone rises abruptly behind, a black-stone fortress built over a century by enslaved labour on a volcanic outcrop eight hundred feet up, with bastions, a garrison and a view that on a clear day takes in Statia, Saba, St Barths and Nevis. It is one of the best-preserved fortifications in the Americas and its scale only registers once you are standing in it. Charles Fort at the water's edge is the smaller, older, largely ruined counterpart. The relationship between the town and the fortress above it is the thing to hold onto. Brimstone was built by enslaved people from the same coast the town sits on, over roughly a century, and it is now the country World Heritage site and its most visited attraction. Standing in the town first makes the walk up the hill mean something different.
What to Try
Give Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park a proper two hours rather than the forty minutes a tour allows — the Citadel, the barracks, the museum and the ramparts each repay time, and the interpretation is honest about who built it and under what conditions. Then come down into town and eat where the town eats: Rum Dawg Beach Bar & Grill and Link Up Beach Bar and Grill sit near the water, DaKaiJé's and Bill A Vybez cover the informal end, Pioneer Pizza and King's Snack fill the gaps, and B's Superette and Dollar Stretcher are the shops. Charles Fort by the shore is a short detour and rarely visited. The westernmost point of the country is a few minutes further along the coast. Give yourself time for the drive too, because the coast road between here and Basseterre is the prettiest stretch on the island.

Drive up to Brimstone yourself rather than taking the excursion, if you have a car. The tours arrive in a block, spend forty minutes and leave, and the fortress is a place that rewards wandering slowly — the upper Citadel is quiet within ten minutes of a coach departing. Go in the morning, because the climb between levels is exposed and the stone holds the heat, and take a jacket in winter: at eight hundred feet the wind up there is genuinely cold by Caribbean standards.

Sandy Point Town is about twenty-five to thirty minutes north-west of Basseterre along the coast road, and around thirty-five from Robert L. Bradshaw International. Brimstone Hill is a few minutes south of the town with its own access road, parking and an entry fee that funds the site's upkeep. Driving is on the LEFT and a temporary local permit is required. Parking in town is free and informal. The beaches here are black sand and working rather than recreational; the swimming beaches are on the south-east peninsula, about an hour away. Shops keep ordinary hours and close early on Saturdays and on Sundays. St. Kitts is in the hurricane belt, roughly June to November.
