Spice Mill Restaurant

Barefoot Caribbean cooking on Cockleshell Beach with a front-row view of Nevis

Why Go

Kick off your sandals, order a rum punch, and settle into an outrigger-canoe bar built by Dominican artisans ΓÇö this is the beach lunch you flew here for.

The Experience

Spice Mill sits at the tip of St. Kitts's southeast peninsula on Cockleshell Beach, staring straight across The Narrows at Nevis Peak. From a Nevis base it's a quick water-taxi hop, and the reward is one of the region's most photographed open-air dining rooms: driftwood accents, jars of glowing island spices lining the shelves, thatch overhead, and the Caribbean lapping a few meters from your chair. Lunch is loose and beachy ΓÇö grilled fish, burgers, wood-fired pizzas, salads ΓÇö and the kitchen leans hard on local produce, fresh-caught seafood, and house-made rubs and hot sauces. Loungers and umbrellas are set out on the sand, staff will bring drinks to your chair, and a spa cabana handles beachside massages between courses. By late afternoon a steel-pan or acoustic set usually kicks in, and if you time it for Thursday you'll land on the legendary barefoot BBQ and bonfire night, with roast suckling pig, Moroccan-style stuffed goat, and jerk chicken pulled off the coals as the sun drops behind Nevis.

What to Try

Grilled mahi-mahi with the house Caribbean rub, the coconut shrimp, and a proper Ting-and-Cane Bay rum punch at the outrigger bar. If it's Thursday, come hungry ΓÇö the beach BBQ is the reason regulars plan their week around it.

Insider Tip

Book a lounger package rather than just a table ΓÇö you get a day-bed on the sand, umbrella, and table service, which turns lunch into a full beach day. Come by water taxi from Oualie Beach on Nevis (roughly 10 minutes across The Narrows) instead of the long road-and-ferry route, and ask the captain to time your pickup for sunset so you're crossing back with Nevis Peak lit gold.

The Practical Stuff

Location: Cockleshell Beach, southeast peninsula of St. Kitts, directly across from Nevis. Best reached from Nevis by water taxi (approx. 10 min from Oualie Beach) or by car ferry plus taxi. Open daily for lunch and dinner; Thursday beach BBQ is the signature night and books out ΓÇö reserve ahead, especially in high season. Dress is barefoot-casual; bring swimwear, cash for the water taxi, and sunscreen. Cards accepted. Reservations recommended for dinner and Thursdays.

Pair It With

  • Oualie Beach — Catch the water taxi to Spice Mill from here ΓÇö arrive early for a swim and a Killer Bee rum punch at Sunshine's before crossing.
  • Reggae Beach Bar — Just down Cockleshell Beach ΓÇö an easy sandy stroll for a second round of drinks or a game of beach volleyball after lunch.
  • Nevis Peak viewpoint at Golden Rock — Balances the beach day with a lush, cool-air stop in the rainforest before or after the crossing.
