Robert Trent Jones II's design at Four Seasons Nevis is that rare combination of a genuinely testing championship layout and a resort round so scenic it feels almost unfair.
The Experience
The 18-hole, par-71 course stretches 6,766 yards and drapes itself across the lower slopes of Nevis Peak, using roughly 450 feet of elevation change to frame nearly every shot with ocean or mountain. The front nine plays closer to the resort and the sea, easing you in with palm-lined fairways and generous landing zones. Then the back nine climbs into the rainforest edge of the volcano, where deep ravines, trade-wind gusts, and subtly contoured greens start asking real questions. Conditioning is Four Seasons-caliber ΓÇö plush paspalum fairways, quick tropical greens ΓÇö and the whole property is quiet in a way Caribbean golf rarely is, since play is largely limited to resort guests. Caddies and forecaddies know every wind line, and the halfway house is a welcome pause after the climb up to the mountain holes.
What to Try
Save your camera battery for the back nine. The par-5 15th is the postcard hole ΓÇö an elevated, sweeping 600-plus-yard downhill par 5 with the Caribbean framing the green. The 16th is arguably the more dramatic playing hole, a long par 5 slashing through a ravine that forces you to commit to your line off the tee. Book a late-morning tee time so you finish as the trade winds pick up, then swing by the clubhouse for a cold Carib on the terrace. If you're not a golfer, the club also welcomes non-players for lunch and drinks with one of the best views on the island.
Insider Tip
Play the correct tees ΓÇö the exposed, elevated holes on the back nine make wind a bigger factor than the yardage suggests, and stronger players routinely under-club into the breeze on the mountain holes. Also: take a forecaddie. It's not just about reading greens; they know which gullies swallow balls and where the vervet monkeys tend to 'borrow' unattended snacks from your cart.
The Practical Stuff
Located on the grounds of Four Seasons Resort Nevis, on the leeward (Caribbean) coast just north of Charlestown. Priority tee times go to resort guests; outside play is limited and should be arranged well in advance through the golf shop. Rentals (clubs, shoes, umbrellas), a full practice facility, PGA instruction, and caddies/forecaddies are available. Soft spikes and collared shirts required. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and more water than you think ΓÇö the tropical sun is deceptive under the sea breeze. A round takes 4 to 4.5 hours; carts are included and GPS-equipped.
