Why Go
A sugar estate turned barefoot-luxury hideaway: 30 acres of manicured lawn roll from an 18th-century Great House straight down to a palm-lined stretch of sand on Nevis's quiet north shore. It is the only historic plantation inn in the Caribbean set directly on the beach, and it feels less like a hotel than a very well-kept house party you've been quietly invited to.
The Experience
Guests stay in 36 pastel cottages scattered across the estate, each tucked into its own private quarter-acre of tropical greenery so you rarely see a neighbor. Days follow an easy rhythm: breakfast at the open-air Coconuts pavilion, a slow walk down the Avenue of the Palms to a beach that almost no one else uses, an afternoon by the pool or on the croquet lawn, then cocktails on the Great House verandah as the sun drops behind St. Kitts across the channel. Service is deliberately old-school and first-name; longtime staff remember returning guests, and the pace is closer to a private estate than a resort.
What to Try
Book a candlelit dinner on the Great House terrace and order the local catch of the day with a rum-based Nevis cocktail. Take the free bikes or hiking GPS units for a spin along the coastal road toward Newcastle. Play a set on the tennis court or a round of croquet on the lawn (equipment is complimentary). Ask the bartender for a proper Nevisian rum punch before dinner and drink it barefoot on the beach.
Insider Tip
The best cottages are not the ones closest to the beach, they're the ones a row or two back with a partial sea view - they get the trade winds funneling through the palms and stay noticeably cooler at night without the a/c running. Also, breakfast is included and enormous; skip the big lunch and instead order a light plate at the beach bar so you have room for the four-course dinner. If you're here on a Sunday, don't miss the West Indian buffet.
The Practical Stuff
Location: Nisbet Beach, St. James Parish, on the quiet northern tip of Nevis, about 10 minutes from the Newcastle airstrip and 25 minutes from Charlestown. Best reached by taxi or rental car; the property will arrange transfers. Dress code is resort-casual by day, smart-casual (long trousers for men) at dinner in the Great House. Adults and families both welcome, but the vibe skews toward couples, honeymooners, and repeat guests. High season runs December through April; book cottages well in advance for holidays.
