Since 1996, this family-run stable on the ruins of Nevis's original capital has been the island's go-to for saddle time that trades arena laps for coconut groves, quiet villages, and the surf line at Pinney's Beach.
The Experience
You'll meet your horse in Cotton Ground, tucked between Fort Ashby and the sea, where the paddocks sit right on top of what was once Jamestown. Guides pair you to a mount based on your comfort, walk you through the basics, then lead a small group out through cane-track trails, past goats and old sugar-mill stones, and down to the black-and-gold sand of the leeward coast. The pace is easy for beginners, but if you're steady in the saddle, ask to trot or canter along the water ΓÇö it's the kind of moment people fly here for. Rides run at 9:00 am and 4:00 pm daily, and yes, that late slot is timed to catch the light going pink over St. Kitts across the Narrows.
What to Try
The 1.5-hour Beach & Trail ride ($80) is the signature and honestly the one to book first ΓÇö it's the fullest sampler of what makes riding here different from a resort trail-string. Repeat visitors and confident riders should upgrade to the Sunset Ride ($85) or spring for a Private Ride ($120+), which unlocks canter work and the option to swim with the horses in the shallows ΓÇö a bucket-list moment that only a handful of places in the world offer.
Insider Tip
Book at least 48 hours out in high season (DecΓÇôApr) ΓÇö the small herd means tours genuinely sell out, and walk-ups get turned away. If you want the swim-with-horses experience, request it explicitly when booking and pick the morning ride: the sea is glassier, the light is better for photos, and the horses are fresher for water work. Wear a swimsuit under long, thin leggings (denim chafes fast in salt water) and bring a dry bag for your phone.
The Practical Stuff
Location: Cotton Ground, a 10-minute drive north of Charlestown on the main coastal road, near Fort Ashby. Rides depart daily at 9:00 am and 4:00 pm by appointment only. Minimum age 6 for trail rides; under-6s can do arena walks. Helmets provided and mandatory for riders 17 and under. Cash (USD or EC) and card accepted; tipping guides is customary.
