The Experience
Sangster sprawls across Montego Bay's coast with a single terminal that handles roughly 80% of Jamaica's international arrivals. It's a bright, breezy, open-air-adjacent building where the humidity hits you before customs does. On arrival, you'll flow from the jet bridge into immigration, where lines can swell after a wave of US flights lands mid-afternoon. Departures upstairs feel entirely different — a proper duty-free promenade, rum bars pouring Appleton flights, jerk chicken counters, and Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville with its swim-up pool bar (yes, actually inside the airport). Gates 1–4 handle international; 5–10 are domestic. The staff move at Jamaican tempo — friendly, unhurried — so factor that into your timing rather than fighting it.
What to Try
Grab a Red Stripe and a plate of jerk pork at Margaritaville upstairs while your feet dangle by the pool. Duty-free Appleton Estate 12 or 21-year rum is genuinely cheaper here than stateside. If you have time between flights, the observation deck offers Caribbean-blue runway views. Cambio counters near baggage claim give better USD-to-JMD rates than your hotel will.

Book Club Mobay (around $35 for departure, more for arrival bundles) — it's the single best travel hack in Jamaica. You skip immigration lines that can run 45+ minutes on cruise-turnaround days, get fast-tracked through security, and land in a quiet, air-conditioned lounge with unlimited Ting, rum punch, and Wi-Fi. On arrival, they meet you at the jet bridge. Complete your C5 immigration/customs form before you land — Jamaica hasn't fully digitized it, and the person still filling out the paper form is always the one holding up the line.
The Practical Stuff
Airport code MBJ, roughly 3 km east of downtown Montego Bay. Arrive 3 hours before international departures — security queues spike 6–9 AM and 4–7 PM. Free Wi-Fi throughout. Licensed JUTA taxis (white plates with red PP or PPV lettering) are the only legitimate airport cabs; agree the fare before you load bags. Uber does not operate here. Resort transfers usually meet you just past customs at clearly signed desks. ATMs dispense JMD; most vendors accept USD but change comes back in Jamaican dollars.
