Why Go

Piscadera Bay is a small working bay just west of Willemstad with the island's largest conference hotels around it, which makes it the most convenient base on Curaçao and the least characterful. You are five to ten minutes from Punda and Otrobanda, five minutes from a shopping mall, and standing on a bay with a reef in it. What you are not doing is walking out of your room onto a long beach — the sand here is small and hotel-attached, and if a wide public beach is the point of the trip you want the east or the far west of the island instead.

The Experience

The bay itself is a narrow inlet with resorts on either side, a stretch of hotel beach, and boats coming and going. Behind it the World Trade Center Curaçao and the conference facilities give the area its second life as the island's business address — which is why Piscadera is busier midweek than most resort areas and quieter at the weekend, the reverse of everywhere else. The surroundings are ordinary Curaçao suburb rather than resort landscaping: supermarkets, a mall, workshops, a couple of restored landhuizen on the hills. It is not a strip you stroll, and there is no evening scene to speak of in the bay itself; you get in a car or a taxi and go into the city, which takes almost no time at all. That trade is the whole character of the place: you give up atmosphere at your doorstep and get back a location from which every part of a fairly large island is reachable in under an hour, including the airport, which matters more than it sounds on a short trip.

What to Try

The reef is right here, and Dive Center Curaçao — Goby Divers works it, which is the strongest argument for the bay beyond convenience. Curaçao Fishing Adventures runs the offshore side and Fiesta Tours Curacao handles the island days out. Pirate Bay Curaçao Beach Club and Restaurant is the beach-club option in the bay and the pleasant end of eating here; Karbon Curacao and Tomatoes Pizza Curacao cover the everyday, with Broaster Chicken and Pizza Mia for the uncomplicated version. Landhuis Morgenster with its art gallery is the nearby historic house worth the detour, and Rancho Harmonia is the riding. For shopping, Penha Duty Free at Sambil Mall and Nature's Discount Santa Maria are minutes away, and Tesoro Food Center is where you stock a kitchen. The Curaçao Tourist Board is here too, which tells you something about the area.

Treat Piscadera as a base, not a destination. It earns its place because you can be in Punda in under ten minutes, at Mambo Beach in fifteen and at the western coves in forty-five, and because the reef in the bay means you can dive before breakfast. Do not plan evenings here — book the table in Pietermaai or Punda and take the short drive, which is what the residents do.

The Practical Stuff

Piscadera Bay is about five to ten minutes west of Willemstad and around fifteen from Hato airport, which is as central as Curaçao gets. You want a car: there is no walkable strip here and the island's beaches are spread from Jan Thiel in the east to Westpunt in the far north-west, forty-five minutes away. Parking is straightforward, unlike in the city. The area runs on a business rhythm, so it is fuller midweek and during conference season and noticeably quieter at weekends. Driving is on the right, Papiamentu and Dutch are the local languages with English widely spoken, and the guilder is the local currency although US dollars are accepted almost everywhere. Curaçao sits outside the main hurricane belt, so conditions are more consistent year-round than in the eastern Caribbean.
