Jan Thiel, Curaçao: The Dutch End of the Island

Why Go
Jan Thiel is the resort strip east of Willemstad and it is unmistakably Dutch — the holiday apartments, the beach clubs, the supermarket, the language you hear at the next table. It is a made beach in a sheltered bay with clubs along it, quieter and more family-shaped than Mambo Beach fifteen minutes back toward the city, and it sits within a few minutes of Spanish Water, the island's main yacht anchorage, and some of its best diving. Stay here if you want a self-contained beach base with good food and no need to go anywhere; go into Willemstad for the days you do.
The Experience
The bay is small, calm and busy in a well-organised way, with the beach clubs occupying most of the sand and the resorts and apartment complexes stacked up behind. It has the feel of a European holiday village more than a Caribbean one, which is either the appeal or the reason to keep driving. Immediately west, Caracasbaai is the working inlet with the marina, the dive operations and the boat trips, and the coast between them holds the sites people come here to dive. Spanish Water behind the ridge is where the yachts sit. The evening is busy but not late — dinner, drinks by the water, and an early enough finish that families are the majority. Beach access here has generally carried an entry charge, and the parking fills at weekends.

Eat at the beach: Papagayo Beach Club and Zanzibar Beach & Restaurant are the two names people know, Jan Thiel Beach Club is the straightforward one, Mondi Jan Thiel sits back from the sand and Surfcafe Tank 14 handles the daytime. Il Forno Caracasbaai and Paddy's Curacao cover the other end, and Milk Curaçao is the stop with children. Insider Tip
Do a full shop at Van den Tweel on your first day. It is a proper Dutch supermarket and it is the reason self-catering works well at this end of Curaçao — the range and the prices are unlike the small island shops, and a week of breakfasts and lunches bought there pays for a couple of dinners at the beach clubs. Then get in the water at Caracasbaai rather than only at the beach: the diving a few minutes west is what people who know this island come for.
The Practical Stuff
Jan Thiel is about fifteen to twenty minutes east of Willemstad and around half an hour from Hato airport. You want a car — the strip itself is walkable but the city, the western beaches and the north of the island all need one, and Curaçao is bigger than it looks with the best coves up to an hour away. Parking is available and fills at weekends and on public holidays. Beach access has generally carried a charge and loungers are extra, so check at the entrance. Dutch is very widely spoken here alongside Papiamentu and English; the guilder is the currency and US dollars are taken almost everywhere. Driving is on the right. Curaçao sits outside the main hurricane belt, so the season is far less of a planning factor than further east, and this bay is on the sheltered side.

Jan Thiel is calmer, more family-shaped and more self-contained; Mambo Beach is louder, later and fifteen minutes closer to Willemstad. Both are made beaches with clubs on them, and the sea is the same.
