Because aircraft park on the apron rather than at fixed jetways, arrivals and departures involve a short walk across the tarmac, which sounds quaint until you realize it's part of the charm (or a wet dash if a squall rolls through). Inside, you'll find a coffee shop, sit-down restaurant, fast-food outlets, bars, ATMs, currency exchange, a small pharmacy, a post office, and a VIP lounge if you fancy a quieter pre-flight moment. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout, and nursing rooms with changing tables make it genuinely family-friendly. The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism keeps a Visitor Information booth in the Customs Hall stocked with maps and brochures — grab one before you head out.
What to Try
Duck into the Visitor Information booth in the Customs Hall for a free island map and current event listings — locals staff it and their tips are gold. Because GCM uses portable ramps instead of jetways, pack a compact umbrella or light rain shell in your carry-on — a passing shower between the plane and the terminal will absolutely soak you otherwise. And know that taxi fares here are zone-based (not metered), so ask the dispatcher for the fixed rate to your hotel before you get in; for late arrivals, families with heavy bags, or first-time visitors, a pre-booked hotel transfer or private driver is almost always worth the small premium over a queue-and-hope taxi.
