Why Go
Forget the glossy megaresort circuit ΓÇö Cocobay is 65 wooden cottages tumbling down a green hillside between Ffryes and Valley Church beaches, connected by winding paths, breezy verandahs and four small pools that always seem to have a lounger free. It's adults-only, all-inclusive, and unapologetically low-key: no swim-up bar rowdiness, no kids' club soundtrack, just tree frogs at dusk and the Caribbean going pink beyond your hammock. Couples come for the honeymoon-postcard bones (four-poster beds, outdoor showers, sea-view plunge tubs in the upper cottages) and stay for the fact that nobody's rushing them anywhere.
The Experience
The property spills across roughly 10 acres of hillside on Antigua's south-west coast, so expect stairs and slopes ΓÇö the payoff is that almost every cottage has a real, uninterrupted sea view rather than a parking-lot glimpse. Days drift between the main pool by reception, the quieter cliffside pool near the spa, breakfast on the open-air Rafters terrace, and shuttled trips down to the powdery sand at Ffryes Beach. Non-motorised watersports (kayaks, paddleboards, snorkel gear) are included, as are yoga on the deck, guided nature walks and beach massages. Service is small-island warm ΓÇö staff learn your name and your rum preference by day two ΓÇö and evenings lean intimate: candlelit dinners, a resident band a few nights a week, and the neighbouring Sheer Rocks restaurant a short walk away for a proper splashy date night.
What to Try
Book a Cocobay Cottage on the upper tier if you can ΓÇö those are the ones with the private plunge pools and the wraparound decks that make the Instagram shots. Do at least one dinner at Rafters (Caribbean-leaning menu, sunset side) and one lunch at Sheer Rocks, the cliff-edge tapas spot next door with its own infinity pool day pass. Take the free shuttle down to Ffryes Beach in the morning before the day-trippers arrive, grab a kayak, then paddle around the headland toward Valley Church for the clearest water. Sign up for the couples' massage in the open-air spa cabana ΓÇö you can hear the surf underneath you. And don't skip the rum tasting if it's on the week's activity board.
Insider Tip
Cottage number matters more than category here. Ask specifically for a cottage in the 40s or 50s numbering range on the upper ridge ΓÇö same price bracket as some lower ones, but dramatically better sunset views and fewer stair-climbing neighbours passing your deck. Also: the resort is genuinely hilly and there's no elevator, so if mobility is a factor, request something near reception when you book, not on arrival.

Location: Valley Church / Ffryes Bay area, south-west coast of Antigua, roughly 25ΓÇô30 minutes by taxi from V.C. Bird International Airport (VCB); around US$30 one-way. Adults-only (18+), all-inclusive covering meals, house drinks, non-motorised watersports and daily activities; premium spirits, spa treatments, motorised watersports and Sheer Rocks are extra. Four pools, two restaurants, and shuttle access to two beaches. Best weather DecemberΓÇôApril (dry season, high prices); shoulder months of May and November offer better rates with usually fine weather. Wi-Fi is included but patchy on the far cottages. Pack reef-safe sunscreen and comfortable sandals ΓÇö those hillside paths are charming but not stiletto-friendly.

- Adventure Antigua — Family-run since 1999, their Eco Tour circumnavigates the island and hits stingrays, Hell's Gate and Great Bird Island ΓÇö the single best day-trip to break up resort time, and they'll collect from Cocobay.
- Sheer Rocks — Cliff-edge tapas and ros├⌐ spot literally next door to the resort ΓÇö walk over for a long lunch by the infinity pool, then wander back for a nap. The one off-property meal every Cocobay guest should book.
- Ffryes Beach — Cocobay's closest public beach and one of the prettiest strips of sand on the west coast ΓÇö go early with a kayak from the resort, then finish with lobster at Dennis's or Turner's Beach Bar just along the shore.
- Shirley Heights Sunday sunset party — The classic Antiguan evening ΓÇö steel pan, barbecue and the postcard view over English Harbour. About 45 minutes by taxi from Cocobay and worth every dollar of the fare.
