The Powder Room Spa
A hidden dockyard sanctuary where colonial history meets moringa, gold and myrrh.
Why Go
Tucked beneath the pool deck at BOOM inside UNESCO-listed Nelson's Dockyard, this pocket-sized spa turns 18th-century gunpowder storerooms into an unexpectedly serene wellness hideaway — the kind of place you stumble into after a Shirley Heights sunset and end up rebooking twice.
The Experience
You approach through the stone-and-timber warren of Nelson's Dockyard, past yachts bobbing in English Harbour, and drop down below BOOM restaurant into a cool, low-lit space where the trade wind and the smell of frangipani seem to follow you in. Therapists work in intimate treatment rooms scented with the house Elements Antigua line — moringa oil pressed from trees grown on the island, blended with frankincense, myrrh and, in the signature ritual, actual gold. It's less resort-spa polish and more locally-owned, hands-on healing: expect long conversations about your posture, custom pressure, and warm island hospitality. Couples share a room for a duet massage; solo travelers get generous silence. You emerge blinking into the harbour light feeling like you've been let in on a secret the superyacht crews have been guarding for years.
What to Try
The 'Water Proofed & Gun Powdered' body treatment is the house wink to the dockyard's history and a great intro to the Elements Antigua line. Massage-first visitors should book the Hot Stone or the Far and Away Aromatherapy (both $120). If you have time for one splurge, the Signature Treatment ($195) layers massage, facial and body work using the gold/frankincense/myrrh serums. Sailors nursing helm-shoulder should ask for the Deep Tissue; parents traveling with kids can book the Teen Massage. Round it off with a gel mani-pedi before dinner upstairs at BOOM.
Insider Tip
Book the last slot of the day (around 4pm) and pair it with sundowners on BOOM's terrace — the spa closes at 6pm and you can walk five minutes to Pigeon Beach or up to Shirley Heights for the Sunday jump-up without breaking the calm. Bring cash or a card that handles USD; and if you're staying at Admiral's Inn or arriving by tender, mention it when you book — they'll often coordinate timing so you're not rushing back to the dock.
