Bolans Village, Antigua: The Village Behind the West Coast Beaches

Why Go
Bolans is a village on Antigua's south-western side, inland of the coast road between Jolly Harbour and the beaches that run south from it. Almost every visitor to this part of the island drives past the turning without taking it. There is no beach in the village and nothing arranged for tourism — what there is instead is an ordinary Antiguan settlement of houses, churches and small businesses, five minutes from some of the best swimming water on the island and a world away from the marina development up the road.
The Experience
The village sits on rising ground with the sea visible in glimpses to the west and the hills of the interior behind. It is residential and quiet, laid out along a few streets, and the pace is domestic — school runs, shops, people sitting out in the evening. The contrast with Jolly Harbour a few minutes north is instructive: one was designed for visitors and the other simply exists, and they are close enough to walk between if you were determined. Below the village the coast road runs south past Darkwood Beach and on toward Ffryes and Turners, which between them are the finest run of swimming beaches on Antigua and are largely undeveloped. The village is included here for the same reason as the other inland settlements on this platform. Antigua is divided into places people live rather than places people visit, and a guide that covered only the beaches would describe a coastline rather than a country of about ninety thousand people with a working interior behind it.
What to Try
Use the village as the practical side of a west-coast stay and spend the days on the beaches below it. Darkwood Beach a few minutes south is the one to head for — a long pale stretch with calm shallow water, a bar and very little else — with Ffryes and Turners Beach continuing down the coast and each quieter than the last. In the village, The Fox House Bar & Restaurant is the local table and the reason to stop rather than drive past. Jolly Harbour is five minutes north for the supermarket, the marina and the boat trips. St. John's is twenty-five minutes north for the market and the quays, and the southern harbours are about forty minutes away. Darkwood, Ffryes and Turners are the three beaches to work through, each quieter than the one before it.
Insider Tip
Eat in the village rather than on the marina strip. The difference in price between a meal in Bolans and the same meal five minutes north at Jolly Harbour is substantial, and the cooking is not worse — it is simply aimed at people who live here. The same logic applies to the beaches: Darkwood and the stretches south of it are free, largely undeveloped and better swimming than anything at the resort end of the coast. And use the coast road rather than the inland one when driving south, because the beaches are visible from it and you will find your own favourite rather than taking somebody else recommendation.
The Practical Stuff
Bolans is about twenty-five minutes south of St. John's and thirty-five from V. C. Bird International, inland of the west coast road. Driving is on the LEFT and a temporary local permit is required. You need a car; buses run the coast road but the village sits above it and nothing is walkable to the beaches. Parking is free and informal. There are small shops but no supermarket of any scale — Jolly Harbour five minutes north has that. The beaches below the village are public with informal parking and few facilities beyond a beach bar. Antigua is in the hurricane belt, roughly June to November, with the drier season from December to April.
